At the County Tyrone Assizes at Omagh on Friday morning, counsel and special jurors were in attendance to take up the record of Bloomfield v. Stephens. The case created a good deal of interest, and the court was better filled than usual. The transaction out of which the record arose was before the public during the past winter, and a record in connection with it tried at last Spring Assizes, Bloomfield v. M'Hugh, when the jury found a verdict for the plaintiff. It appeared from the evidence then put forward and published in the Press that a woman named M'Goldrick, wife to a tenant of Mr. Bloomfield, Castlecaldwell, county Fermanagh, not being able to live happily with her husband, went to live with Mrs. Bloomfield in the capacity of a servant. The woman, who is a Roman Catholic, was often visited in the house of Mr. Bloomfield by her husband and by the Roman Catholic clergyman. The woman WAS NOT INTERFERED WITH in any respect by Mr. or Mrs. Bloomfield with regard to her religion, nevertheless she refused to attend worship at the Roman Catholic Chapel. After being some two years in the service of Mrs. Bloomfield, the husband wanted her to leave it, but she refused. He threatened to have her sent to an asylum for refusing to go with him, and with this view he swore an information, and had her arrested, and taken before the magistrates at Belleek Petty Sessions, and, after investigation, the Court decided she was not insane, and she was discharged. Some hours later, when the woman was at the railway station, to go by train from Belleek to Castlecaldwell, the woman's husband, with the Roman Catholic priest, Mr. M'Hugh, of Belleek, Dr. Stephens, and others, came on the railway platform, and by force and violence carried the woman away against her will. Mr. and Mrs. Bloomfield resisted the attempt to CARRY AWAY THE WOMAN, during which they were roughly treated and assaulted. The following day a committal to the Omagh Asylum against the woman as a lunatic was signed by Dr. Stephens, and she was conveyed to and lodged in the Omagh Lunatic Asylum. At the following meeting of the Omagh Asylum Board the woman was examined, and declared to be sound of mind, and at the request of a solicitor, sent specially by Mr. Bloomfield, she was discharged, and the woman returned to Mrs. Bloomfield, then in Dublin, with whom she has since lived. Mr. Bloomfield then brought an action against Mr. M'Hugh, who was a merchant in Belleek, and chairman of the Ballyshannon Board of Guardians, for damages, and the venue was changed from Dublin to Omagh Assizes, when damages were obtained against Mr. M'Hugh, and the present action, which was for £1,000, was a similar one against Dr. Stephens. After the sitting of the Court there was considerable delay, when it was announced to his Lordship (Mr. Justice Murphy) that the case was being settled. Soon after Mr. Drummond and the counsel for plaintiff said that the following settlement had been arrived at by consent:—That all further proceedings be stopped in the case of Bloomfield against Stephens on condition that the defendant pay to the plaintiff the sum of £80 within one week in discharge of damages and all costs incurred in the action. The terms of settlement were engrossed, signed by both parties to the suit, and made a rule of Court. His Lordship then discharged the special jury.
